Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a great way to train your brain to stay in the moment and not judge the thoughts you are having. This is particularly useful if you’re stuck in your thoughts going round in circles and finding it difficult to break away. It’s also really useful to help you learn to tolerate and manage emotions rather than feeling like you need to escape. This way we develop a sense of control over our thoughts and emotions. There are lots of good apps out there such as Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer. Most offer a free week or so and then you need to pay a fee. Check them out and see if they work for you. A small investment can pay off if it’s the right thing for you.
A free resource with a variety of different types of mindfulness exercises is www.freemindfulness.org. The tracks vary in length so you can choose shorter tracks to start with to build up your skill. There’s a good evidence base for mindfulness developing skills that will help you manage emotions. Give it a go!
